DOWJONES Business English(DowBe)のe-learningを開始した。ネットを使用した英語の通信教育で、2010/4/22が学習の期限だ。

自分のレベルに合った記事を毎日読み、読解問題に取り組むことで、英語による情報収集力とリーディング力を鍛える。辞書は使わず、速読、 多読の練習を行うというもので、以下のように学習を進める。

0. Placement Testを実施して、レベルを測る - 数年前のニュース記事2本から、それぞれ10問の設問
1. 90本以上の学習 - 日々配信される自分のレベルの記事を90本以上学習
2. 修了テスト
3. 合格したら？ - 次のレベルで学習
4. 不合格だったら？ -  さらに10本の記事を学習して、もう1度修了テスト
5. 再度不合格だったら？ -もう1度最初から同じレベルで90本の学習

まずは、Placement Testを実施した。所要時間は30分弱。結果は、level 1-8 のうち、level3だった。

初級レベルをパスし、中級コンテンツもある程度理解できています。毎日学習を重ね点数を伸ばしていってください。

まずまずの成績といったところだろうか。Amazon.comやエクソンの株を売買するときに、米国のYahoo! Financeで企業の財務諸表や、決算発表のニュースを必死になって読んでいたので、英語の読解力が上がったのかもしれない。

さっそく、配信されている記事を見た。第一印象は「Breaking News English(http://www.breakingnewsenglish.com/index.html)と、どこが違うの？」というものだった。
Breaking News Englishは、FREEのサイトなので、わざわざ、お金を払って、勉強するまでもないと思った。
しかし、実際に学習を開始すると歴然とした差があった。今回の記事は韓国政府が今後10年間で炭酸ガスの排出量を2020年の想定レベルよりも30%削減するという内容だった。朝のニュース番組で見たばかりの記事で、不明な単語があっても、すっと理解できた。国際・経済ニュースを中心として、毎日、記事が配信される。Breaking News Englishは、国際・経済ニュースもあるが、火事、殺人、誘拐といった社会ニュースも多く含まれており、何の記事なのか理解しづらい部分もある。また、記事の配信はDowBeのように毎日でなく、数日ごととなっている。
さらに、Breaking News Englishにも学習問題があるが、オンラインで回答することはできない。DowBeでは各記事の問題はオンライン画面で回答することができ、ヒントや解説も含まれている。細かなことを考えずにゲーム感覚でリズム良く学習を継続すれば、Reading能力は付くような気がする。TOEICのReading問題でも90%位正解できるレベルに達せるだろう。Voice Readingのツールも用意されているので、うまく活用すればListening能力もアップするかもしれない。

いまさら、英語を勉強して何になるの？という気もしないではないが、学生時代にやり残した英語の勉強、コツコツとやってみようと思う。
